Piano / PIA & SING

Play less and support the singer more

Decide what to keep and place fills between vocal phrases.

The best arrangement for singing yourself may not be the most elaborate piano part. Keep what establishes harmony and pulse, then ask whether the remaining notes support or obscure the voice.

Unless doubling is an intentional effect, avoid repeating the vocal melody all the time. Try simple chords under singing and a brief answer after the phrase.

Reducing notes creates your practice version; it does not mean the original arrangement is too busy. If a fill makes you miss the next entry, remove the fill first.

Try it step by step

  1. Play a phrase with only harmony and pulse.
  2. Add the voice without fills.
  3. Choose one genuine gap for a short answer.
  4. Check that you return comfortably for the next phrase.

Check before making it harder

When the fill is removed, does the song still work and feel easier to sing?
